The Case
This was a creative initiative of the St Kilda News, a long-running and well-known local community newspaper run by citizen journalists. I was employed as a ‘graphic design supervisor’. The project was based in the outer suburbs of Melbourne in a brand new building owned by the City of Casey. The multi-purpose facility was designed to be used for functions, theatre, and indoor sports. We greatly enjoyed the natural light and space the venue offered.
My role was to support and supervise a team of community volunteers to help in the design and production of a one-off printed creative journal. I worked alongside a team of other supervisors, who in turn worked with their own volunteers to produce written content, photography and a website.
Part of the task involved setting up a studio using recycled PCs for the teams to use, and then navigate our way through with a constantly unstable internet connection. Despite this, we were able to work together to solve these and other challenges. I was able to help the volunteers by running brainstorming sessions, while they created artwork which I helped them to compile and organise into a magazine format, using Photoshop, Indesign and Illustrator to bring our 'zine' to completion by the deadline.
